PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (CNS) -- Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley, who traveled to Haiti as part of a March 1-3 tour of the earthquake-damaged Haitian capital as part of an advisory group from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, called the trip “a very moving experience” and praised the efforts that Catholic organizations are playing in the aftermath of the Jan. 12 earthquake.

The cardinal spoke via telephone to The Pilot prior to his departure from the Port au Prince Airport March 3.

From Cardinal Seán's blogLast Friday, I met with Lisa Alberghini of the Planning Office for Urban Affairs and John Noone, Chair of the Board, for our Annual Member Meeting. The Planning Office is a social justice ministry of the archdiocese that develops permanent affordable housing on behalf of the Church for people of limited means. We talked about work they are doing with Pine Street Inn that will provide permanent housing for the homeless in Boston's South End, and about a housing development they hope to begin working on soon in Dorchester with St. Mary's Women and Children's Center (another archdiocesan ministry).

Notes from the HillHearing held on physician assisted suicide bill On Tuesday, Feb. 23, a bill to legalize physician assisted suicide was heard at the State House in Boston. Individuals and organizations testifying against the bill included the Massachusetts Catholic Conference, pro-life organizations, hospice officials and disability advocates. Three individuals testified in favor of the bill after hearing news reports announcing the hearing, but no organizations came forward in support. This marked a change from a hearing held in 1995 on a similar bill that drew hundreds of people to the State House. House 1468, “An Act Relative to Death with Dignity” was filed by Rep. Louis Kafka (D-Stoughton) at the request of a constituent with a terminal condition who has since passed away.
