Healing Combat Veterans and Their Families: Exploring the Powerful Connections between Medicine and Spirituality

Start Date:

2010-07-16

Location:

Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston

Description:

With increasing numbers of veterans reintegrating into communities across the nation, this symposium lets you interact face-to-face with some of the most recognized experts on integrating spirituality and medicine.  Best practices will be identified and success stories shared on the collaboration between spiritual leaders and mental health professionals in the assessment and treatment of the new generation of veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq with PTSD and TBI.  The symposium will also explore the role of spirituality in helping to heal trauma survivors, and how clergy and chaplains, as front-line responders, are uniquely advantaged to identify veteran constituents who may need medical intervention.  Strategies for working in a spiritual-medical team and an opportunity for spiritual leaders to learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of PTSD and TBI to assist individuals in seeking specialized care will be reviewed.
